The name Bimasena is derived from a well known figure in the Mahabharata legend in the fragment of the feud between the Pondawas (the good) and the Kurawas (the bad), in which Bima (or Bimasena) is of strong character in defense of the weak and the oppressed. This fragment of the Mahabharata is often performed in the traditional Javanese "Wayang" leather puppet shows played deep into the night until the break of dawn.
